The Three Types of Homelessness

Amongst the term homelessness, there are a few denominations.

Chronic Homelessness

The chronic homeless are those who are stuck in the shelter system for an extended period of time. These people are usually older and suffer from some disablity keeping them out of work. Though this type of homelessness is most attributed with homelessness in general, chronic homelessness makes up a small percentage of homelessness.

Transitional Homelessness

Those who are transitionally homeless stay at shelters for a short period of time before moving into more permanent housing. These individuals are usually younger, suffering from abuse or a life changing incident. This is the most common type of homelessness as it is just "transitional."

Episodic Homelessness

These individuals suffer episodic homelessness are consistently in and out of shelters. Unlike transitional homelessness, these people stay at shelters for usually suffer from medical, mental or substance abuse problems.
